13 Hilarious Tweets Mistaking Climate Activist Greta Thunberg as Barbie Movie Director
The Barbie movie is the biggest film of 2023 so far, and climate activist Greta Gerwig has unexpectedly received credit for the release after a name mix-up on Twitter.
2023’s highly-anticipated film, Barbie, was released on July 21 to raving reviews from critics and fans alike. From the epic casting of Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, to the underlying messages of self-love and acceptance, the pink plastic world of Barbieland is already considered a shoo-in for the upcoming awards season.
Director Greta Gerwig is the mastermind behind the film, but some have been giving the credit to Greta Thunberg – the 20-year-old climate activist. It’s a simple name mix-up, but the moment of realization by those on Twitter is quite entertaining.

The official Barbie movie poster doesn’t include Greta Gerwig’s name so we don’t blame the internet for the confusion. That being said, Thunberg is an activist with a full schedule of campaigns and conferences, so fitting in a Hollywood movie would’ve been impossible.
The top tweet going viral for the Greta mix-up shows a photo of the young activist, captioned: “Thank you so much for making Barbie.” It has over 7.1 million views and it’s unsure whether the user intended it sarcastically, but nevertheless, it’s been an actual wake-up call who thought mistook Thunberg for Gerwig.
