Best-Value Hong Kong and Macau Restaurants Named in Michelin’s New Bib Gourmand 2023 List – Serving Everything from Spicy Noodles to Char Siu for Under Us$50

As frequent visitors to Hong Kong already know, the city is brimming with hundreds, if not thousands, of great-value restaurants spread throughout its neighbourhoods – from noodle specialists to family-run venues known for handmade dumplings and more.

The Michelin Guide spotlights just a few dozen of these each year in its Bib Gourmand category, which represents “restaurants that offer the best value-for-money gourmet experiences”. In Michelin vernacular, this means “a three-course meal (drinks not included) for a maximum price of 400 Hong Kong dollars” – or around US$50.

The definition is rather loose, as beloved dessert shop Kai Kai in Jordan (to which Hong Kong band NYPD paid homage in their popular song “Gai Gai”) is also included on the list, despite only serving sweet soups and light snacks.

It’s also a rather generous price ceiling, and some of the additions to the 2023 list are casual food stalls at which HK$400 would get you a filling meal with plenty of change left over.

One such place is Twins Liangpi Limited, in the Prince Edward neighbourhood. This takeaway-only noodle bar is known for its slippery glass noodles (liangpi) doused in a punchy chilli and vinegar-forward sauce, and topped with cucumber, coriander, crunchy soybeans and roasted peanuts.

Other new venues on the list include Fisholic in North Point, which sells fish-based snacks and dishes, from milky fish broth noodles to fish skin nachos; and Sai Kwan Lo Jo, a Jordan-based takeaway whose bestseller is its Iberico pork sticky rice dumplings.

Ship Kee, a Cantonese restaurant known for its dim sum and barbecued meats, also debuted on the list, as well as northern Thai restaurant Saya (one of only three Thai venues on the Bib Gourmand list), which is highlighted for its khao soi and chargrilled chicken.
Yi Jia, which serves Sichuan and Shanghainese classics such as drunken chicken alongside more novel items such as soufflé meringue with mango custard filling, has also been awarded a place on this year’s list.

With the six new additions, there are now a total of 65 Bib Gourmand restaurants in Hong Kong, up from 59 in 2022.

Macau, which has seven venues on the existing list – including Din Tai Fung’s City of Dreams branch – does not have any new additions in the 2023 edition.

“Hong Kong is a destination that is never short of talent, with creativity in the industry,” says Gwendal Poullenec, the international director of the Michelin guides.

Last year’s Bib Gourmand list was released on January 12, 2022, followed by a virtual ceremony on January 19 to announce the Michelin-star rankings for Hong Kong and Macau. This year the Michelin-star announcement will return as a live event, held in Macau on April 26.
