Chinese farmer grows watermelons that bounce, have yellow flesh and taste like cucumber

A farmer in Hubei, central China, has grown “bizarre” watermelons that bounce like rubber balls but are still juicy and mild, a news website reports.

The watermelons looked no different than others on the outside, but could bounce like a rubber ball when thrown to the ground, the news website Qq.com reported. One watermelon cracked only after being thrown at the ground three times but even then, it was very hard to tear it apart.

The pulp of the watermelon was a faint creamy yellow with green seeds. It had a light scent and tasted similar to a cucumber, and a little sour when stir fried.

Local agricultural specialists were consulted, and said they would test the watermelons, after which they would offer an explanation.

Readers of the website commenting on the story said the unusual watermelon could be found in Shaanxi province where locals called it dagua and it was cultivated mainly for its seeds.
