Draftkings & Fanduel Value Plays for the Rocket Mortgage Classic
Micah Bedard (Darddog) is here to pinpoint the best PGA DFS salary savers for this week’s Rocket Mortgage Classic.
We were so close to having one of the value plays take down a tournament. Alas, Chez Reavie could not close the deal, as he shot +1 on Sunday and Keegan Bradley ran away with the Travelers by three shots.
It was a great week for the value plays though, as Chez finished T-4 and Austin Eckroat and Aaron Rai finished T-24.
This week, we move to the Detroit Golf Club that is hosting the Rocket Mortgage Classic for the fifth time. I’ll be honest, this stretch of Rocket Mortgage and John Deere is definitely not my favorite on tour. This is usually a birdie-fest, and I expect nothing different with some wet conditions in Detroit leading up to the tournament.
If you’ve listened to any content this week, you’ve probably heard that you need to target the “bomber” narrative here. While I don’t disagree that distance will be helpful at Detroit GC, it’s not a prerequisite to success. I just want guys who who make birdies – period. I don’t care how they make them.
Because of that, I think you can get some lower-owned guys just because they don’t hit the ball the farthest.
Let’s get into some value plays under $7,500 on DK and $9,000 on FD to give your lineups an edge this week at the Rocket Mortgage Classic.
PGA DFS Picks: DraftKings & FanDuel Value Plays for the Rocket Mortgage Classic
Thomas Detry
DraftKings: $7,400
FanDuel: $8,700
I love targeting Detry at birdie track setups. He’s a great player, just a little on the volatile side. There’s not too much trouble he can get into at Detroit GC (hopefully), and I think he rebounds from a MC last week at Travelers. It was a bit of an outlier performance, as he lost strokes on approach and putting and needed two more shots to play the weekend. Before that MC, he had made five straight cuts. He makes a lot of birdies, and I think he gets back on track this week at Rocket Mortgage.
Cameron Champ
DraftKings: $7,000
FanDuel: $8,500
Oh look, Micah is talking about Cam Champ again. It worked out well for us last time, with him finishing T-8 in Mexico. Since then? He’s returned to his normal self, only making two of five cuts and finishing T-50 and T-63 in the couple times he got to play all four rounds. But kind of like Detry, I want to play him at courses where there are good scoring atmospheres. He can pull driver here wherever and not incur too much of a penalty. I’m not leaning much into course history this week, but it doesn’t hurt that he’s made the cut here three out of four times and has a T-20 and T-12.
Akshay Bhatia
DraftKings: $7,000
FanDuel: $8,600
Bhatia is another Mexico Open target we will bring back for Rocket Mortgage. I honestly don’t understand how he is not getting a ton of love this week. He’s 30th in Birdie or Better % on tour. Maybe he doesn’t mash the ball off the tee, but it’s not like he’s a short hitter. He went through a bit of a rut ball-striking at Memorial and the RBC Canadian Open but still made the cut in his last start. He’s taken a couple weeks off, and I think the time off will be just what he needs to settle back in. He’ll be my highest-owned golfer in this range.
Dylan Wu
DraftKings: $7,000
FanDuel: $8,200
Wu has been a little hit-and-miss lately, making four of his last seven cuts. However, when he has made the cut, he hasn’t finished worse than T-32, which was at the U.S. Open. He’s another guy like Bhatia who has a great Birdie or Better %. He missed the cut at the Travelers last week on the number, mainly due to some poor approach play. That is the first tournament in his last six that he has lost strokes on approach, so I will just view it as an anomaly. I like Wu as a cheap and low-owned option this week.
Vincent Norrman
DraftKings: $6,900
FanDuel: $8,100
Why don’t we make it a Mexico Open target trifecta?! There’s no way around it, our boy Vinnie has not been great lately. To be fair, he hasn’t played in too many events recently that I would want to target him. He went on the blistering run from March through May, mainly because there were a lot of birdie-fest events at which he can go after it. He’s missed his last three cuts, mainly due to bad approach play. He cleaned that up a bit last week, still missing the cut. He’s one of the furthest drivers of the ball on tour, and I think he can use that to his advantage this week and put himself in a bunch of chances to score.
Good luck to y’all this week!
